How to Choose a Brand and Website Designer in Yorkshire

Choosing the right person to design your brand and website is one of the more important decisions you'll make as a business owner. Get it right, and you gain a creative partner who helps you grow with clarity and confidence. Get it wrong, and you can spend months, and a fair amount of money, on something that still doesn't feel like you.

If you're based in Harrogate, York, Leeds or the wider Yorkshire area and you're starting to look for a designer, this guide will help. After more than 25 years in design, here's what I'd encourage you to look for, and the questions worth asking before you commit.

Look for strategy, not just pretty pictures

Plenty of designers can make something look nice. Far fewer take the time to understand the business behind it.

The best work doesn't start with colours or fonts. It starts with questions. Who are you for? What makes you different? Where are you heading next? Without that thinking, even a beautiful brand can miss the mark, because it isn't built on anything.

So as you look at potential designers, notice whether they talk about strategy as well as aesthetics. A considered designer will want to understand your business before they design a single thing. That's not them overcomplicating it. That's them doing it properly.

Choose someone who asks thoughtful questions

This follows naturally from the first point, and it's one of the clearest signals you can look for.

Pay attention to how a designer behaves in those first conversations. Are they curious about your business? Do they ask about your clients, your goals and your story? Or do they jump straight to talking about deliverables and timelines?

The right partner will be genuinely interested in the people behind the business. They'll listen carefully, ask questions others might overlook and guide you towards what's right, even when that means an honest conversation rather than simply agreeing with everything. That blend of warmth and honesty is where the best work happens.

Look at the bigger picture, not just one piece

Your branding and your website are not separate projects. They're two parts of the same story.

A logo that doesn't translate to your website, or a website that doesn't reflect your brand, leaves you with an experience that feels disjointed. When the two are designed together, with the same thinking running through both, everything feels cohesive. Your business looks considered wherever someone meets it.

So it's worth choosing someone who understands both brand and web, and who looks at how all the pieces fit together. The detail matters, but so does the way the whole thing comes together.

Make sure the relationship feels right

You'll be working closely with this person, often sharing the ambitions and uncertainties you don't tell many people. So beyond the portfolio, ask yourself a simple question: does this feel like someone I'd trust and enjoy working with?

Branding is a collaborative process. It works best when there's trust, openness and a shared commitment to creating something meaningful. If a conversation feels rushed, dismissive or purely transactional, that tells you something important before you've even started.

Questions worth asking a designer

If you're not sure where to begin, these questions will tell you a lot:

  • How do you approach a project? Where do you start?

  • Do you offer strategy as well as design?

  • Can you help with both branding and the website?

  • What does the process look like, and how long does it take?

  • What do you need from me to do your best work?

  • Can I see examples of businesses you've helped that feel similar to mine?

The answers matter, but so does the way they're answered. You're looking for clarity, honesty and a sense that you'd be in safe hands.

Does your designer need to be local?

It helps to ask whether working with someone nearby matters to you. For some businesses, there's real value in a designer who knows the area, can meet in person and understands the local market in and around Harrogate, York and Leeds.

That said, design is a wonderfully flexible profession. Plenty of brilliant working relationships happen entirely online, with calls, shared documents and the occasional visit. So while a Yorkshire base can be a lovely bonus, the most important thing is finding someone whose approach, values and way of working feel right for you. The right partner is worth more than the nearest one.
